tick tock

my former manager had her baby
he decided he couldn’t wait to see the world and popped out a couple weeks early. (pushy little bugger).
so i used him as an excuse to knit something new.
i kinda want to die it’s so cute
(the pattern is cisco, the yarn is tosh dk in the parchment colorway and tosh sock in toast colorway)
the pattern is free but you get what you pay for. there are some errors and, even though i was getting gauge, it would have covered his wee eyes if i’d kept knitting. since i’d already modified the pattern, i decided keep making it my own by adding a single crochet edging and i-cord ties.
i’m pretty pleased with how it came out.
i’ve never really thought of myself as a baby person.
being single, twenty five, with no foreseeable access to a uterus,
i tend not to think about them.
but when one reaches a certain age,
it’s inevitable that babies are going to start springing up all around you.
i’d argue being a knitter intensifies this phenomenon
what with all the extra women about.
this new baby and playing a pretty hilarious game of “kaboom” with anna’s three year old henry, has made me realize something:
not all kids suck.
i guess i’m growing as a person.
(does anyone else hear that ticking?)

Too Cute!!!
I once bought something similar to this in freakin La Paz, Bolivia in 2006 when I was young, single and supposedly on a major travel adventure. I thought, “hmmm, maybe one day…” and couldn’t resist. An old teddy-bear of mine still wears it, years later, childless and barren haha!
I think I didn’t really want a kid so much as something to accesorize. The bear will do for now until I too grow as a person and come up with a better reason to pop one out…

You know, I think kids are pretty amazing. As long as they’re not mine.
Perhaps that requires a little explanation:
I love being an uncle. Seeing my nieces grow up truly is a wonder. To see these mini humans experience the world, to realize that everything to them is new, and to witness the working of minds that are unfettered by rules and preconception, who ask endless questions that _need_ to be answered, and to be a part of their small (but ever growing) world. It’s a privilege.
Still, when I begin thinking about kids of my own, the being responsible for the life of another human being…. And not just the safety and health, but the idea that I’d be responsible for essentially training a feral human to become a decent person… Ugh. I get tight in the chest.
I fear that like many things, I’ll be ready for it too late.
I do love being an uncle, though, those girls surprise me every time.

I was feeling baby knitting fever at the beginning of the year. I wanted to knit something for a baby, without having to actually HAVE the baby. Someone said I should knit baby things for my “future” baby. Well truthfully, I don’t want a bunch of baby stuff hanging around my child-free home. So I said the words “I wish someone would have a baby I could knit for” and then BOOM. I currently have four friends (and counting?) that are all expecting in the late summer/early fall. I thought damn, that’s what I get for opening my big mouth.

Remember, Mo’s child size. You can use him as a surrogate. Don’t try it with the cats if you value your scratch-free face. Well maybe with Buddha.

Um…what about my uterus? Haven’t we had this talk? I’ve been around babies a TON lately and totally have been warming up to the idea of having one (but not for a while). You should knit something for my dog. He’s a pug. He’s fatter than Mocahontas, but close to the same size. And I think I saw my cat today (they ran away from a house only blocks from where I now live). If Gus and I are reunited, you MUST knit him something. I’ll keep you posted.

All I can tell you is that if you wait till you’re ready – well, I have four and I am STILL not ready, is all I can say. And mine don’t suck – not anymore – and now only sometimes. Nothing a good, stiff drink can’t usually fix.
