something to do with knitting

November 8, 2011

the metaphor that best describes my life these days
would be something like surfing.
each week is a new wave
and somehow,
i’m on top of this one.

which has allowed me to knit a little on my sock.
those of you who’ve been with me a while
might even recognize the yarn.

anyone?

no?

*sigh* it’s like i’m working with chimps.
it’s the silkie socks that rock that i dyed
a year and half ago at the knot hysteria silk retreat

i remember (though it may be a hallucination)
that i was going for long color runs.
and lookwide stripes. exactly as i planned. i think.

i can’t wait to take a shot in the daylight,
one that shows off the subtle genius of the dyer.

but i have a question:
how much further do you think i should knit
before i begin decreasing?
it’s been forever since
i knit a sock.

thoughts?

p.s. it’s so good to write a post about knitting again.

For a standard wedge toe, I can get away with starting to decrease at the bottom of my small toe, and go until there’s 16-20 stitches left.

keeping in mind you have to knit its mate.. I always opt for rather short socks… I get twitchy when knitting the leg portion. so my vote is to have about a 4-5″ leg before doing the decrease. I LOVE the yarn.. very nice! I’ve not done crap with anything I dyed, etc at the silk retreat.. ready to go again….i need the mental health break!!

I like a square toe, no kitchener for me. I prefer two needle bind off with short rows, thank you very much.

So I’d continue to the bump in that big toe (or the top of that littlest one).

Did your mama tell you not to put your feet on the furniture, even with the socks?

  4. Audry Says:

I quite like the longer color runs in your well dyed yarn. Someday i hope to learn how to dye that way.
Are you planning to have identical or fraternal socks?

  5. Kimberly Says:

Usually you start decreasing for the toe about 2″ inches before you get to the end of your big toe, which is usually right about at the base of it. You have to keep in mind that even though you will be handwashing them, that they might shrink even a tad so a smidge extra room will be beneficial šŸ™‚

  6. Bonnie Says:

I agree with 2″ from the total length you want. It looks great!

  7. Julie Says:

Yup! 2 inches all the way. šŸ™‚ Nice colors!

  8. Maja Says:

Keep doing to the base of your toes, then start secreasing. Cute feet by the way!

  9. CeeCee Says:

    WoW…you’ve got some sexy toes!!
