sew

November 9, 2009

i know this is supposed to be a knitting blog, and it is. i promise i have knit three hats since my last post, finished a baby sweater, and am almost done with my first me-sized sweater.

however.

last week i caught the sewing bug again and made four curtains and a cover for my mom’s mac book (to ward off the evil dust).
i feel the need to share, even if it is the most basic sewing ever.

i promise, if i hem my jeans, i’ll keep it to myself.
probably.

the day has come

October 29, 2009

i don’t know about y’all, but i love addi turbos.
when i was first learning to knit, my gauge was unbelievably tight and while i loved straight wooden needles, i needed some help. i recall a ‘large’ women’s mitten i once made that wouldn’t fit a 5 year old. and that was after going up 2 needle sizes.

so nina suggested i try addi turbos.

i’ve never looked back.

for months now, ever since my first (or maybe second) visit to natural stitches and especially now that i work there, i have been lusting after the addi clicks. they’ve been on backorder forever and anytime anyone mentioned skacel, my heart jumped.

well, on monday october 26, we got our shipment, and i got my wish.

isn’t it beautiful?

secrets

September 26, 2009

so i’ve had two secret projects i’ve been working on.
one is done, the other close.
not having a camera has really helped me not talk about them.
but there is still some time to go before the recipients get their surprise so let’s talk about my current obsession.

it would be this:
first sweater
first sweater back

this would be my first sweater.
it’s a top-down raglan recipe sweater done in cascade eco-wool (ebony)
i am knitting like mad on my last secret in order to get back to this, my love.

it’s exactly what i need to knit on to get over not getting into the port ludlow retreat.
* sigh *

>bummed<

September 25, 2009

so here’s the e-mail:

Hi Steven,

I’m sorry to tell you that sadly, all the spots at the retreat have been filled. We’ll definitely do it again, and I wish we had room for everyone this time. I hope we’ll see you at the next one.

Stephanie

i knew this would happen. but i am disappointed.
*tear*

blast from the past

September 22, 2009

i received and e-mail today.
an e-mail from an old college friend.
in it were pictures of times past, a happier time, a time with more freedom.

one of them reveals my knitting beginnings (literally).

Knitting Origins

things to note in this photo:

long metal needles
green fun fur yarn
my long ‘college’ hair
the knitting lady’s glasses
the rapt expression on my face

things note not in this photo:

this was during a 2 a.m. grocery run in Meijer.
we happened into the ‘yarn aisle’ to find the knitter lady
she literally taught us to knit right then and there.
(e-wrap cast on, english style)

that’s what knitters are like.
they need to spread the word.
the yarn harlot was right.

currently, i have two projects with which i am madly in love.

truly.

madly.

deeply.

the first is this:

Granny Blanket

yes i know, this is supposed to be a knitting blog but i fell in love with crochet because of helloyarn

plus using noro to crochet. . . .its just a beautiful thing (if you ignore my neighbors’ yard waste bags in the background. ugh!)

don’t worry, i’m still a knitter. i won’t be going over to the dark side. just vacationing there.
(ps the green bag in the photo i did not make, i purchased it from yokoo’s etsy store)

my second big love is this:
Progress
lovely lace knitting. it makes me so happy to look at.

however.

there were many (invisible) mistakes made due to the fact that I was working from my photocopy of the book. this meant that some purl stitches were knitted since the chart demarcates them by slightly shading in the boxes on the chart (i hate my life)

thank heaven for double yarn overs or i would never have caught the mistake in time.

i can’t wait to finish both of these.

well, i’m off to knit
