livid

November 22, 2010

i can be realistic.
the knitting world is dominated by women.
and there ain’t nothing wrong with that at all.
so it’s not a surprise that there are far fewer knitting books for guys,
and that many are for women to knit for men.

this is all fine.

i can even get over the fact that i’m gonna see a lot of boring grey vests and sweaters designed for men. all this is ok with me, if a little disappointing.

however!
i am currently reading what can only be described
as the most offensive “men’s” knitting book ever written.

it is page after page of stereotypes
that only serve to fullfill themselves!

i.
am.
livid!

but before i finish reading this thing,
and writing my scathing analysis of this bitch,
i thought, why not do something positive, right?

so if you can guess the name of the book i’m reading right now,
i’ll send you a skein of yarn.

let the games begin bitches!

edit: contest CLOSED! thanks for playing.

it has to be ‘Knits Men Want: The 10 Rules Every Woman Should Know Before Knitting for a Man’ … am I right? ;)

  2. Erin Says:

    Knits Men Want?

    what a let down…
    (Sorry Bruce…)

  3. mary Says:

I’m thinking Knits Men Want too.

  4. Faye Says:

    Knitting With Balls?

  5. Faye Says:

Knitting With Balls? Or maybe the Knitting Man(ual)? Although Never Knit Your Man a Sweater seems pretty cliche, too!

  6. Charles Lee Says:

I just find your blog..I am also guy knitter too.
I been reading your blog, this is first time
    living comment to you!!

Iam guessing ONE of does books:

    1. “20 NEW CLASSICS MEN’s KNIT” by Erika Knight

    2. “Knitting for Him” by Martin Storey & Wendy
    Baker

3.”The Knitting Man(ual)” by Kristin Sprkland

    Love,

    Charles

Not to be redundant, but that’s also the book I immediately thought of. The book is condescending to both men and women … and “the Only 10 Patterns She’ll Ever Need” ???

  8. Melissa Says:

    Hmm…

Never Knit Your Man a Sweater (Unless you’ve Got the Ring.)

Equally offensive, but does not pretend to be otherwise.

  9. Kimberly Says:

i thought the same, knits men want because I too own it..haha

  10. David Says:

“Knits Men Want” I mean, there was an opportunity for a MAN to write a book for guys, but no, he (or his publisher) chooses to focus on what women can knit for guys. Maybe you can publish a book called “Knits Men Want to Make for Themselves” — I’ll help!

  11. jen Says:

    real men knits

  12. Jen Says:

Sounds to me like you need to write your own. :)

  13. Rachel Says:

I’ve never even looked at a single men’s knitting book – I don’t knit clothing very much at all, so all the knitting I’ve done for men has been of the hats/scarves/socks variety.

I think the answer is probably _Knits Men Want_, based on the Amazon description, but I’d rather it be _Knitting with Balls_, because it would be awesome if a book with that title were actually really super-offensive.

  14. Stephen Says:

Ugh. I need to find a woman to knit for me.

  15. jaguarrior Says:

My personal favorite to giggle at is Never Knit Your Man a Sweater (Unless You’ve Got the Ring)

The patterns aren’t too bad, its the whole concept of the thing be sure to read the intro on amazon, i find it terribly amusing lol

  16. Julia Says:

Knitting with Balls????? It’s gotta be! ;D
Also, your model is the cutest thing EVER!!! I have wanted a French bulldog for the longest time.

  17. jody Says:

Knitting with Balls? I think it’s high time that YOU wrote the book!

  18. allisonmj Says:

OMG! I was curious so looked at Knits Men Want. HAS to be it. Just that side by side comparison of men versus women was shocking enough. Hello generalizations!
P.S. If you wrote a book, I would buy it!

  19. Kim Says:

I am guessing Knits Men Want: 10 Rules Every Woman Should Know Before Knitting Her Man a Sweater. First, the title is heteronormative which, standing alone is bad enough. As I understand it, it gets even worse as the book is broken down into essays reinforcing stereotypes of the immature beer guzzling football tossing guymandude and the women who strive to please them. I HATE HATE shit like this with the red hot fury of a thousand burning suns.

  20. Anna Says:

Never Knit Your Man a Sweater makes me want to throw up.

  21. JM Says:

Knits Men Want: 10 Rules…. As a woman I found that book utterly offensive.

  22. Romi Says:

Hate to jump on the bandwagon, but I will! Knits Men Want?

  23. Anonymous, too Says:

I’m going to be different: “Son of Stitch ‘n’ Bitch” by Debbie Stoller. Not only is the text pretty sexist, but the knitted booze bottles, “Space Invaders” ties, and Mexican wrestling masks were among the tackiest things I’ve ever seen!

  24. AnneMarie in VA Says:

I’m thinking it’s Son of Stitch and Bitch. I haven’t looked at it, and I don’t have the Debbie Stoller issues some people have, but I still bet that’s the one.

  25. erin Says:

Stephen, I hope the fog you’re in rises soon. Remember, you threw out some intention and all of us followers have/are responding. Meanwhile, my email box has become clogged (because I follow u and ur blog closely) but not yet a peep from your fingertips.
post and let us know your ‘pain,’ so we can move on to your next folly…
    Happy Thanksgiving, dear one!

  26. Cindi Says:

    Hey,
i think it is knitting with balls by michael del vecchio. only because i think it is the newest one out there, and i figure you’ve read all the other ones already.

  27. [...] you guessed the right book in my “livid” post, want a skein, and haven’t sent me your address, better send it [...]
